29 january 2009
On 29 January 2009, H.E. Mr. Stuart Beck, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN (Palau) and Chair of Islands First, was the speaker at the Conflict, Security & Development series co-hosted by NYU's Wagner School of Public Service, the Center for Global Affairs and the Master's in Global Public Health. His speech, entitled "The Impact of Climate Change on International Peace & Security: A View from the Small Island States," focused on the ways in which climate change can impact various aspects of security, drawing on examples from small island states. Ambassador Beck cautioned that, to date, the failure to consider fully the interlinkages between climate change and security had been a critical gap in current international negotiations and debate. He concluded by discussing the the UN Resolution on Security and Climate Change as an attempt to redress the lack of attention given to the issue.
